John 1 v 1 -18 What is the glory of man?
Alex reminds us that flesh is corrupt and man without God is merely an almost worthless combination of elements.
How incredible it is that God chose to become flesh just as we are.

John 1 v 10, v 17, Romans 10 v 1 - 17

"He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him."
Alex mentions several philosophical belief systems which people follow despite having opportunity to know God and to learn about God through the bible.
The precise relationships in the universe and all things pertaining to life are obviously by design but people will believe anything rather than accept the creator.
Alex looks particularly at what Bertrand Russell had to say about Christianity in 1927 in a talk which achieved great acclaim but is philosophical argument riddled with errors and nonsense that show Russell lacked understanding of the subject he chose to ridicule.

Genesis 1 - And God Said,"

The Creation Story - not based on a true story, not adapted from a true story. It is THE true story. It is history.
GOD SPOKE and that is how we and everything else came into existence. Secular man makes up his own story about chance combinations of elements because he chooses to live in the dark. God separated the light from the darkness and He has separated us from darkness to know the truth. Why?

The Fourth Day of Creation. Genesis 1 v 14 - 19

Back to school. Alex reminds us of the scale of things with the Sun, Earth and Moon and the significance of everything having it's place and purpose.
God created and in every case saw that it was 'good'. How do we know what is 'good'? Where does that feeling come from? Ancients saw that the sun is 'good' and then worshipped it instead of the creator. Today's man does the same thing in worshipping insignificant things he has promoted to be his own god.
Alex gives us three purposes explaining why the sun, moon and stars are as they are and gives bible references which state a time will come when days and nights will end and the solar system will be no more.

Creation of the Human Race. Genesis 1 v 1 - Genesis 2 v 4

Alex talks about belief in Darwinian evolution and some of the many attempts at experiments to substantiate those beliefs. He gives particular reference to Prof. Dean Kenyon who as an atheist published a book stating abiogenesis as fact but only seven years later he published a book stating that the existence of and evidence from DNA proved he had been wrong. He became a Christian.
High intellect is not required. The truth is so simple it can be understood by a child.

Jesus must become greater. John 3 v 22 - 36

There is something special about the countryside. A quiet place that brings peace, clarity of mind and answers. We read of people going into the countryside to find answers from John the baptist but there is someone else on the scene and He is also baptising people.
John wasn't looking to remain top celebrity. He had played his part and this was a time of transistion between the old baptisms and new baptisms in Christ. Alex likens this to the parts played in a beautiful musical composition. John was complimentary to Jesus.
Like the people of this passage we need answers and should take time to go to a quiet place and spend time with Christ.

We receive only what is given from Heaven. John 3 v 22 - 36

The Wrath of God (1). John 3 v 16 - 21 and v 36

God is loving and just but people don't want to hear about the wrath of God. It may be denied but all people have some sense that there is right and wrong. Where does this knowledge come from? How do we recognise that an injustice has occurred?
Travel this country and you find a church building or chapel in every town. Evidence that the people acknowledged and worshipped God but the majority now believe there is no God. What has happened? People have been conditioned to believe they can live as they please, do whatever they want and our children are being taught that they can even decide their own gender.
The wrath of God will be understood when these people are judged.
When we tell people about the love of God we should also tell them of the wrath of God that will befall unbelievers.

What is the definition of wrath? If we could quantify wrath where on the scale would we see God's wrath?

Born Again vs Spiritually Blind. John 3 v 1 - 15

The world is changing and we change. We have experiences and make many decisions that change our life. Some decisions may be trivial and according to the moment such as hair colour. Others are significant and change the direction of our lives such as marriage or change of career.
Believers have the most significant change and experience possible in this life - that of being born again.
The world is not changing for the better and those born again can see things as they are.
We were all spiritually blind at one time but many remain so. The bible tells us men love the darkness rather than the light and that is where they stay.
Those born again have a new spirit, are cleansed of their sins and receive a new spiritual heart - all by God's grace.

New Spirit in our lives. John 3 v 1 - 15

Those who are born again are filled with the Holy Spirit.
This morning we hear about the Spirit working within us. The Holy Spirit will show us the meaning of scripture as we read or listen to preaching but at another time the same verses read or preached will be received with a different meaning. Each time appropriate to us and our needs. A group of believers will hear the same preaching but come away with something appropriate to them as individuals.

The Way of The Spirit. John 3 v 1 - 15

We are told there are more than seven billion people in the world and babies are being born at 190 per minute but (in the West) the number of Christians is falling. What does that mean to us?
There is no formula that causes people to be 'born again'. It is only by the Holy Spirit according to the will of God. Believers in the church cannot save anyone but have a responsibility to share the gospel with others.
We are outnumbered by unbelievers so how many of us will it take to make a difference and stop the decline of Christians in this country?
Alex's sore throat is improving. He reads from the ESV bible.

The Barriers Between People - The Woman at the Well. John 4

"(For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)"
Why is that? What rift is there between Jews and those of Samaria? Alex looks at the origin of the problem and why it persists despite them all having the same first five books of scripture. Because of the historical barrier the disciples were surprised on their return to find Jesus not only talking to a Samaritan but to a Samaritan woman!
The woman had come to the well at the hottest time of day so as to avoid the people who knew her past and lifestyle. With her knowledge of the Pentateuch the woman recognises Jesus as the one He claimed to be - the Messiah - and then went to share the news with those she had been avoiding.
The message for us is that we should not allow any barriers whether apparently great or trivial, whether imposed by others or by ourselves, to prevent us sharing the gospel of Christ with everbody.

Discipleship. John 4 v 2

Alex relates a personal experience of a missed opportunity to share the gospel this week. This evening he looks at how the disciples went out speaking to people and baptising on the authority of Jesus. How exciting that must have been for them and for those being baptised.
We should think about the first disciples. How would they have spent their early times with Jesus, what would they talk about, would they be celebrating together? Whatever they were doing we can expect Jesus used every conversation as a teaching opportunity. The disciples would learn from everything He said, everything He did, each and every way Jesus interacted with others.
Looking at the list of the 'most powerful people' in the world Alex shows what they all have in common. Jesus is in a class of His own and as believers He is always with us whatever we are doing and even at the times when we fail.

The Promise. John 4 v 10

Referring to the computer programming commands, IF, AND, OR, and THEN, and the fact that in a program they will operate with 100% accuracy we look at what Jesus said in verse 10. What is True Worship? John 4 v 7 - 26

Alex shares some of the shocking and disturbing results of a survey conducted with people calling themselves Christians. It is astonishing that so many hold beliefs that are personal opinions which are contrary to God's Truth.
The woman at the well had her own version of truth when she said "I have no husband" but Jesus responded by exposing her with God's truth that is complete. God's truth will always expose sin and the bible is nothing but God's truth, not opinions. Sin is all around us and openly promoted in a world corrupted by the opinions of men.
Jesus offered salvation to the opinionated woman and He has the same offer for all sinners today.

Worship in Spirit and Truth. John 4 v 23 - 24

We are reminded of the sin and wretchedness in our world today and of the importance for us to reach people with the gospel. This can only happen through the Holy Spirit.
Many people are living without spirit. They live, act and think only according to the flesh. We only need look at the Apostles to see how the Holy Spirit moved through them and we believers have the same Holy Spirit - powerful living water that can flow to others in all directions.
We are all less than the perfection intended for us. How comfortable is the Holy Spirit living in you? What does He find in the library of your mind and do you allow Him access to clear out all the rubbish and clutter in your life? Is He with you in the kitchen when you decide what you will consume and is He with you in your living room?

Are You Receiving Nourishment? John 4 v 1 - 42

The believer knows that whatever happens in our lives is for God's purpose. We find our circumstances change and we may move locations, sometimes our path is obviously directed by the Holy Spirit and it is pre-ordained that we have appointments to keep. The Samaritan woman had an appointment with Jesus at the well.
Alex looks at why Jesus declined food from His disciples and where His nourishment came from. A seed had been sown and the disciples were to 'see that the fields are white for harvest.' Do you get enough of similar nourishment? What nourishment do we really need to enable us to sow or to reap?
Finally we are challenged to look and compare ourselves as we have been and as we will be.
Alex reads from the ESV bible.

A Need for Signs and Wonders? John 4 v 43 - 54

The book of John is evangelical - sharing the gospel with unbelievers who then have opportunity to be born again. In these verses we look at the second miracle Jesus performed in Galilee again regarding 'the flesh'.
The news of miracles always spread. It was what people wanted to see then as it is today but even seeing a miracle may not bring belief in Christ. Jesus has a rebuke for those who want signs and wonders but still do not believe (v48). The 'official' in these verses believed the words of Jesus and his dying son was healed.
Today in our lives we have an abundance of signs and wonders. Believers 'loving one another' is a sign that we are in Christ and the Holy Spirit is working in us.
The bible itself is a miracle - a sign given to us all. The apostle John was moved to write as he did and all disciples are moved to spread God's word however they can.
